We love Streatham Hill is delighted that Lambeth has elected a new civic Mayor for 2009/10, Cllr Christopher Wellbelove, Labour councillor for Clapham Town ward.

Mayoral duties include representing the borough at official functions, meeting and greeting dignitaries and helping to raise cash for local charities.

The new Mayor plans to use websites like Twitter and Facebook to let people know what he is doing, and hopes that by embracing technology he will be able to give more people an insight into the role.

Councillor Wellbelove said: "I have thoroughly enjoyed being deputy mayor, which has been excellent grounding to prepare me for becoming Mayor. However I am really looking forward to taking the full role. By using some of the free services available on the internet I hope to extend the reach of the Mayoral role to people who otherwise would not come into contact with the mayor or know about the work that the mayor does in the borough. I hope that this will demonstrate that this very traditional role can be modernised whilst retaining some of the traditional aspects which many people value."

Network Rail No Messin’ campaign urges Lambeth teens off the rails

Train bosses are calling for Lambeth teens not to risk their lives or the lives of others on the tracks - after shots were fired, and bricks hurled at trains last year by suspects believed to be disaffected youths.

Dozens of teens also risked their lives trespassing on train lines and “playing chicken” with speeding trains, according to Network Rail.

A worrying list of incidents in and around the borough’s stations has been released by the rail provider as it launched its 2009 campaign to stop young people putting lives at risk on the railway.

A Network Rail spokesman said: “The No Messin’ campaign aims to get kids to do something positive with their lives rather than put their lives at risk by trespassing onto the tracks, and endangering other people by causing hazards for speeding trains.”

In 2008 a firework was fired in West Norwood station, smashing a train window, and shots were fired twice at trains by Gipsy Hill and Streatham stations, again smashing windows.

A bike was thrown on to the tracks in front of an oncoming train in Streatham Hill, and a brick thrown at a train in Crystal Palace.

The spokesman said: “What is just as much a concern is the number of kids who trespass on to the tracks to play chicken with trains, or spray grafitti.

“They could electrocute themselves or get hit by the train, and in both circumstances there is only going to be one winner.”

The campaign involves the rail provider funding youth groups and community organisations, to provide opportunities to get young people off the tracks - and on to the right track.

Lambeth boxing club Fitzroy Lodge is the latest to benefit from the scheme, receiving new boxing equipment.

Champion boxer Amir Khan, who is fronting the campaign, said: “Young people need to know that messing about on the tracks is not what earns them respect.”

There were 1,060 recorded incidents of trespass and 412 incidents of vandalism in Greater London in 2008.

Streatham, Croydon, Sutton and Wandsworth railway stations to get £5.5m ticket gates

Fourteen railway stations across southwest London are to benefit from a £5.5m scheme to install new ticket gates and ticket machines.
The stations, Streatham, Streatham Hill, Streatham Common, Tulse Hill, Gipsy Hill and West Norwood, will be updated as part of a £15bn investment in the national rail network designed to improve passenger safety and security.
Gates are also planned at eight other stations: Peckham Rye, Purley, Thornton Heath, Norbury, Wallington, South Croydon, Carshalton and Battersea Park.
Passenger fears increased after the 2006 murder of Tom ap Rhys Pryce as he left an unmanned station at Kensal Green.
Transport minister Lord Adonis said: "At first the gates will be staffed when operational but from next year they will be staffed for 15 hours a day. This scheme marks the first stages of improvements to station staffing that will be delivered from early 2010."
Anthony Smith, chief executive of Passenger Focus, the rail watchdog, said: "One of the key advantages of installing gates is that they must be supervised and therefore staff are present and visible at the station.
"Passengers tell us that they feel safer when there are staff around and it also means they can ask advice about their journey and easily seek out help."

Application to redevelop Streatham Megabowl submitted - have your say

A developer has made an application to Lambeth council to construct almost 300 new homes on Streatham High Road.

The proposals are to transform the land between Streatham Megabowl and Caesar’s nightclub into 286 housing units and a new retail area likely to include shops and restaurants. The current façade of the Megabowl will be preserved, but the rest of the existing buildings will be demolished.

Streatham Hill Commuters Overcrowded

Streatham Hill station has been named as one of the worst ‘pinch points’ for overcrowding on London’s busiest rail routes.

A report by the London Assembly’s transport committee on London’s Overground rail network found the most overcrowded trains in London carry around 40% more passengers than they should be. This has led to warnings of dangerous conditions for passengers including fainting and being crushed by train doors.

Further cuts to rail services are proposed following the economic downturn, despite passenger numbers set to increase over the next decade and the Government needs to take action.
Along with Streatham Hill, other south London stations named in the report are Balham, Clapham Junction, Sydenham and Forest Hill.

Lambeth Council is hosting its annual Holocaust Memorial Day Event this Sunday.

It will take place in the Assembly Hall of Lambeth Town Hall (Brixton Hill, SW2 1RW) on Sunday 25 January 2009 at 3 – 4.30pm.

The theme of this years event is "Stand Up to Hatred".

In Lambeth, we can all choose to Stand Up To Hatred and:

Refuse to stand by and allow others to commit acts of hatred

Recognise the language of hatred.

Challenge newspapers and public figures when they are using the language of hatred.

Stop using language which is discriminatory and stop others when we hear them doing the same.

Recognise when hate crime is taking place and report it

Recognise that a crime does not have to be committed for hatred to be expressed

Learn from history that the ultimate result of unchecked and unchallenged hatred, prejudice, discrimination and racism is genocide.

Lambeth Launches E-Petitions Service

A new online service will give Clapham and Stockwell residents a chance to have a say about issues in their communities - at the touch of a button.

Lambeth Council have launched a new e-Petition service which offers people an opportunity to express a view or raise an issue, which other residents can choose to support if they wish.

Lambeth is among the first local authorities in the country to introduce e-Petitions. Where they have been used elsewhere, they have focused on issues such as planning developments, care home closures, graffiti removal and airport extensions. They allow local people to raise issues and give a good indication of people's opinion on an issue.

Of course, the best way to get a problem sorted out is still to approach your local Lambeth Labour councillor - we spend a great deal of time fighting for residents concerns, and solving problems in our wards. You can contact Larkhall ward councillors using the details listed here, and you can keep up to date with our local campaigns and activities by signing up for the We Love Larkhall e-newsletter or by following us on the We Love Larkhall Twitter.

E-petitions will be looked at by Lambeth Council and will be responded to in the same way that paper petitions are currently dealt with. The council has kicked-off the new e-Petition service by asking residents to put forward a view about whether Transport for London (TFL) should extend the Northern Line to Battersea.

The e-Petition system does not replace paper petitions, and residents can still register their feelings about issues in the traditional way. Once an e-Petition has been submitted, it will be posted with supporting information, so that people can see any background that is necessary to put it into context. Safer Neighbourhoods

Streatham Hill has it's own Safer Neighbourhoods team. This is a dedicated team of Police Officers and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) who work locally and meet with residents to set their policing priorities.

They are on the beat right now, know the community and want to hear from you. You can meet with Streatham Hill's team of six officers and PCSOs to raise your concerns at the next meeting on 22 January at 7pm at the Telford Park Tennis Club, 35 Killieser Avenue.

Party at The Palace

The Palace is a community centre and youth group on the Palace Road Estate in Streatham Hill. It offers a range of activities for local residents of all ages, as well as a space for the community to relax and interact.

Here are a couple of recommended activities:

Street Dance Classes – every Tuesday, 6.30-7.30pm

These classes are run by the Elite School of Dance and Drama. Street dance is a fusion of different styles including, breakdance, hip hop and locking & popping. It is performed to R&B, Hip Hop and dance music. It encourages confidence, positive attitude, flexibility, strength, suppleness, rhythm and co-ordination. Classes are open to all abilities and ages. Boogie Babes – every Tuesday 9.30-11.30am

Boogie Babes is a mother and baby group with a dance class for mums. It gives mothers the opportunity to meet other mums and “get fit and funky whilst your baby plays”. It is also part of the Elite School of Dance and Drama and is run by fully qualified dance teachers. It is drop in group, so you should just feel free to just turn up. Extension planned for Streatham bus service

Streatham bus passengers could benefit from improved transport links to Mitcham and Coulsdon if a Transport for London plan gets the green light.

The proposal will see route 463 which currently runs between Coulsdon and Pollards Hill, extended to loop round Streatham Park Cemetery, taking in Mitcham Eastfields Station. It will also be extended to Coulsdon South station which has rail links to Brighton, Redhill and Gatwick Airport.
Local residents were asked for their views during a six week initial consultation on the scheme last summer and the results are now being reviewed as part of a formal council consultation.

A Merton Council report released on January 5 said: “From the responses received, the altered bus route is a popular proposal. The extended 463 route would introduce a bus service into areas which are currently unserved by buses and will also provide improved access to the rail network.”

The service would run from Monday to Saturday, with a bus every 20 minutes during the day and every half hour during the evening.

NEW: Streatham Hill community sexual health centre

After a £600,000 refurbishment programme Lambeth PCT has opened the Streatham Hill community sexual health centre which offers free and confidential sexual health services to men and women including:

Testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections
HIV fast testing (Tuesdays) and routine HIV testing daily
Sexual health examinations
Free condoms
Advice on a range of contraceptive methods/ emergency contraception
Pregnancy testing/information and referral for abortion
Referral to specialist services.

The centre is located at 41a-c Streatham Hill, London, SW2 4TP. Telephone 020 3049 4006 for an appointment.

The centre will be a one-stop shop for sexual health services helping clients address all their sexual health needs in one visit including contraception, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections. The service, for both men and women will be open from 11am-8pm Monday to Friday (to 6pm on Wednesdays) and on Saturday mornings. Services are free and confidential, and will be offered to all sections of the community.

Boris' new year present to bus users

Tory London Mayor Boris Johnson has hit public transport users hard by massively increasing fares.

Labour's London Assembly transport spokesperson, Val Shawcross AM, slammed the decision. She said: "This unnecessary, above inflation fare hike is going to hit the pocket of every Londoner hard and makes a complete mockery of the Mayor's promise to provide value for money.

"Boris Johnson has given us no evidence whatsoever for his claim that there is a transport finance blackhole. What the evidence does point to is an increase in passenger numbers and revenue in TfL's coffers. If anything there should be a surplus this year, as there was in previous years. For Boris to blame his predecessor for this fare hike is nothing more than a cheap political shot.

"If the Mayor genuinely is concerned about the fares budget then he should have thought twice about abolishing the £25 higher charge for gas guzzlers and should reconsider his expensive plans to replace the bendy bus. It's strange to say the least that Boris is consulting about the future of the Western extension of the congestion charge but hasn't seen fit to consult Londoners on this fare hike which will hit all passengers hard. It just smacks of playing political games with London's transport network".

Community toilet scheme

Lambeth Council has launched an innovative new scheme to improve public toilet provision for residents and visitors. It works by the Council paying businesses a small annual fee in return for the businesses providing access to their toilets, for free, with no obligation to make a purchase.

Under the scheme businesses such as restaurants, bars and shops work together with the council to provide more clean, safe and accessible toilets for members of the public. Several of the premises offer wheelchair access and baby changing facilities.

Please recycle your Christmas tree!

Local residents will be able to recycle their Christmas trees again this year, as Lambeth Council launches its free tree recycling service from 5 January 2009.

The service has been set up as part of the council’s to make recycling easier than ever.Residents who have a real Christmas tree and live in a kerbside property can leave it next to their refuse bin in the week beginning 5th January, and the council will take it away and recycle it for free. The tree should be left at the front of the property before 6.00am on the day of collection, and all decorations should be removed.

People who live in a Lambeth Living property can simply leave their tree next to their estate recycling bank (also in the week beginning 5th January). Alternatively, anyone can bring them to be recycled at the following four sites between 5-16 January:

Streatham Common, Streatham High Road, SW16

Kennington Park, Kennington Park Road, SE11

Lambeth Household Recycling Centre, Vale Street, SE27

It's estimated that each person in the UK will throw away an average of 50 kilos of waste over Christmas, about three million tonnes overall, although a lot of this waste, for example wrapping paper, Christmas cards, and plastic and glass bottles and cans from Christmas parties can all be recycled.

Cllr Sally Prentice, Cabinet member for Environment on Lambeth Council, said:

"We all create a lot more waste during the Christmas period and Lambeth Council is making it easier than ever for people to recycle; our door-to-door Christmas tree recycling service is part of this drive. It’s also worth remembering that people can recycle clothes, toys, books and unwanted Christmas presents at local charity and second hand shops which are always looking for good quality items."

The northern border of Streatham Hill starts at the junction of Streatham Place and Atkins Road and goes along the A205 along Christchurch Road to the junction with Norwood Road. It then follows the railway line westwards, momentarily deviating around Mount Nod Road and Hailshal Avenue, before it eventually meets Rastell Avenue. Here it turns northwards, along Emmanuel Road and New Park Road until the junction again with Streatham Place.
